Nur die Berge sind geblieben
Vorarlberg wird oft als das modernste Bundesland der Welt in den Himmel gelobt. Es sind einerseits sicherlich Träumereien, andererseits ist es der Stolz der Bevölkerung auf das kleine Bundesland im Westen Österreichs, dessen Bewohner vor etwa einhundert Jahren sich lieber bei der Schweiz gesehen hätten. Nur die Einwohner von Bludenz und Hittisau waren Österreich in einer Abstimmung treu geblieben. Aber auch das Weg von Österreich war eine Träumerei, denn die Schweizer wollten das kleine Ländchen nicht – sie hatten Angst vor Überfremdung mit Katholiken. Und so kam es, dass man heute hin und wieder den Begriff des „Kanton Übrig“ hört. Ganz im Süden des Bundeslandes liegt der Bezirk Bludenz mit der gleichnamigen Bezirkshauptstadt – und aus diesem Bereich, der aus fünf Tälern besteht, präsentieren wir hier Ansichtskarten von „Anno dazumal“ und zum Vergleich Fotos von heute etwa aus dem selben Blickwinkel. – Bludenz liegt im Tal der Ill und ist Bezirkshauptstadt und Mittelpunkt von fünf Tälern: Walgau, Grosses Walsertal, Klostertal, Montafon und Brandner Tal. Ungefähr 14.000 Einwohner bewohnen die Stadt, 1869 waren es noch 2.400, um 1900 hat sich diese Zahl verdoppelt.

Vorarlberg is often praised to the skies as the most modern federal state in the world. On the one hand, it is certainly reverie, on the other hand it is the pride of the population in this small federal state in the west of Austria, whose inhabitants would have preferred to see themselves in Switzerland about one hundred years ago. Only the inhabitants of Bludenz and Hittisau had remained loyal to Austria in a vote. But the way from Austria was also a reverie, because the Swiss did not want the small country. And so it came about that today one hears the term „Kanton Übrig“ from time to time. The district of Bludenz with the district capital of the same name is located in the very south of the federal state – and from this area, which consists of five valleys, we present here postcards from „Anno dazumal“ and, for comparison, photos from today from about the same angle. – The city of Bludenz is located in the valley of the Ill and is the district capital and center of five valleys: Walgau, Grosses Walsertal, Klostertal, Montafon and Brandner Tal. Approximately 14,000 inhabitants live in the town, in 1869 there were 2,400, around 1900 this number doubled.
