(from Boudot & al. 2009:52): Coenagrion ornatum is not rare in Turkey and parts of the Balkans. It is much rarer in central Europe and underwent a strong decline. The isolated record from southern Italy pertains to an old record fom 1939 from Cerignola, Foggia. There are no recent records from Italy and the species is believed to be extinct in this country. Coenagrion ornatum is highly specialized and confined to seapage waters, small dirches and rivulets. The species is threatened by intensive agricultural practices.
