Der Kleine Blaupfeil – Orthetrum coerulescens (Fabricius 1798) – ist die kleinste unter den Blaupfeil-Arten. Die Art kommt in ganz Europa ohne den Nord-Osten vor. Wiesenbäche und Gräben, auch Kiesgruben, sind geeigneter Lebensraum für den Kleinen Blaupfeil, deren Männchen sich nach dem Schlüpfen bläulich verfärben. Die Männchen landen zur Paarung auf den Weibchen, koppeln sich an, und fliegen als "Paarungsrad" weiter. Nach der Paarung legt das Weibchen unter Aufsicht der Männchen die Eier ab. Für Nordafrika wurde die ssp. anceps Schneider 1854 beschrieben, diese Unterart findet man auch auf Malta und teilweise auf Sizilien. Die Unterscheidung der Nominatform und der ssp. anceps scheint problematisch zu sein. Schröter (2010) schreibt: "As the taxonomic status of Orthetrum anceps and Orthetrum coerulescens remains unclear and depends on the respective taxonomic concept… it is for pragmatic reasons listed in species rank…"
