(from Boudot & al. 2009:220): Trithemis kirbyi is widespread in Africa, Arabia and the Indian Peninsula and reaches the southern Mediterranean coast. Recently the species has been found in Sardinia in 2003 and in Spain in 2008, which might be a prelude to an expansion of its range to southern Europe.

Der Gefleckte Sonnenzeiger, Trithemis kirbyi Selys 1891, kommt in Afrika, Arabien und in Indien vor. Die Art bevorzugt offensichtlich stehende Gewässer, denn sie kommt am Nil nicht vor. Nach Corso & al. (2012) wurde die Art auch auf Lampedusa gesichtet, nach Sardinien und Südspanien die dritte gesicherte Beobachtung der Art in Europa. In Arabien kommt die Art in grösseren Wadis in den Bergen vor, die Männchen sitzen an Felsen und auf Schotterbänken, oft in der Sonne; Weibchen sind oft weit weg vom Wasser auf Bäumen und im Gebüsch (Feulner & al. 2007).
