(from Boudot & al. 2009:165): Somatochlora meridionalis and S. metallica are closely related and are separated only by minor morphological differences of both adults and larvae. For this reason S. meridionalis is regarded as a subspecies of S. metallica by some authors.

Die Balkan-Smaragdlibelle, Somatochlora meridionalis Nielsen 1935, hat ein östlicheres Verbreitungsbild als die Glänzende Smaragdlibelle, allerdings kommt es zu vielen Überschneidungen im südlichen Mitteleuropa. Die Unterscheidungsmerkmale sind sehr gering, daher gibt es auch Meinungen, dass es sich bei beiden um dieselbe Art handelt und S. meridionalis als Subspezies von S. metallica handelt. Ein typisches Gebiet in dem "beide" Arten vorkommen ist die Provinz Udine, Fiorenza & al. (2012) unterscheiden beide als "gute" Arten. Im Dreiländereck Bulgarien-Griechenland-Türkei kommt die lokal verbreitete S. borisi (Marinov 2001) vor. Fleck & al. (2007) beschreiben die Larven der Arten.
