Der Südliche Blaupfeil, Orthetrum brunneum Fonscolombe 1837, kam bisher im südlichen Mitteleuropa vor, Corso & al. (2012) melden die Art als selten aus Malta. In der Zwischenzeit gibt es Meldungen auch von der Ostsee (Polen). Schröter (2010) meldet die Art aus Kirgisistanaus bis auf 2.400 Meter fliegend. Er ist mit dem Blaupfeil nahe verwandt, unterscheidet sich allerdings von diesem durch die geringere Grösse und die durchgehende blaue Bereifung des Abdomens. Die Männchen halten sich im Biotop (schwach bewachsenen Bäche, Kanäle und Gräben) auf und warten dort auf vorbeifliegende Weibchen, denen sie nachfliegen und sich während des Fluges ankoppeln. Nach der Paarung überwacht das Männchen die Eiablage und vertreibt andere Männchen.
